I’ve been coaching dating and self-help professionally for 5 years
I’ve been coaching dating and self-help professionally for 5 years. Every time I bring up affirmations, I get a seminar room full of eye rolls. Positive affirmations are a staple of self-help curriculum, but nobody gives them a fair shot.

Here’s the mistakes that I see people making with with affirmations;
- They’re not fully associated
- They’re not fully associated. Affirmations are essentially an anchor (in NLP parlance) to a specific state of mind. While I believe you should be able to be disciplined to take action and do what you’ve decided to do regardless of what state your mind is in, it’s always easier when your perspective is pumped up and in state when you’re stepping out of your comfort zone. - They don’t repeat their affirmations enough. Affirmations should be a mantra. - They don’t tell their inner critic to go fuck themselves When positive affirmations fire off, very often, a counteractive inner voices fires back with minimizations or excuses to take the total vibe of the affirmation out. We can fight back our programs firing off through a variety of methods (reframing, shadow work, parts integration, disintegrating) beyond the scope of this article. If you want me to cover these types of things in detail sooner than later, leave a comment below on what you want to hear me cover, and I’ll put it in the queue.
Take these ideas, print them out, and cut them into strips
Take these ideas, print them out, and cut them into strips. One affirmation on each strip. Then every time you feel bad about yourself, take them out. Or, if you don’t have a printer, cut the paper into eight strips then write down one thing on each strip of paper.

Write down as many positive affirmations as you can
Write down as many positive affirmations as you can. Anything that you know you need to tell yourself is important. Each time you’re feeling down on yourself, take out your jar of affirmations, look in the mirror and read one to yourself. Repeat it while looking right into your own eyes and feel the truth of the statement.
Tomorrow, We’re talking about some cool stuff I’ve been reading about; Impostor syndrome. What is impostor syndrome? It’s more common than you think, and it’s linked to a lack of self-belief. We’ll talk about it in tomorrow’s blog.
